We killed 6 kidnappers, terrorists in Imo state: Force spokesman claims
Operatives from the Imo Police Command’s tactical unit have taken down three key figures of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), which is linked to the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, shared this information in a statement on Saturday in Owerri.
Based on reliable intelligence, police operatives identified and executed a coordinated operation targeting the terrorists’ hideout in a forest in Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area, on January 24.
As they approached, the operatives faced heavy fire from suspected IPOB/ESN members. They responded with bravery, engaging in a fierce gun battle.
The operation led to the neutralization of six members of the terrorist group, including three identified kingpins: Ifeanyi Anayo, also known as Zuma De Rock, aged 28; Chukwuemeka Odionyenfe, known as Nmimi, aged 22; and Kingsley Sunday, aged 21. All were from Ogube, Ihube in Okigwe.
The police recovered five AK-47 rifles, 552 rounds of live ammunition, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), various communication equipment, and eight operational motorcycles used by the group.
Previous investigations indicated the group’s involvement in several serious crimes, including the attack on the Owerri Correctional Center on April 5, 2021.
Adejobi also mentioned that the neutralized individuals were linked to the killing of five policemen in Umunna, Okigwe, on December 12, 2022, and the burning of the Arondizuogu Police Station on February 8, 2022.
The group was also implicated in multiple kidnappings, including those of WAEC staff on June 5, 2023, four reverend sisters on August 21, 2022, and four Chinese nationals on December 6, 2023.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, praised the bravery and dedication of the operatives.
He urged police personnel across all commands to maintain their efforts and follow the Force’s action plan to significantly reduce crime in the first quarter of 2025.
